Summary
The goal of the ãspecial emphasisä initiative for Scarlett Middle School
is to recreate Scarlett as a model middle school and a community-centered
school.
The initiative is being led by the Scarlett Review/Design Team (SR/DT) and
is supported by grant and partnership opportunities, parental involvement,
and commitment from leadership and staff at the district and building
levels. The effort has been focused in three primary areas:
1. a comprehensive school reform program
2. increased technology emphasis, and
3. facilities enhancements.
Comprehensive School Reform Program
Using the U.S. Department of Education Comprehensive School Reform
Guidelines, the SR/DT has identified seven model programs that support the
principles of effective schools:
- AIM
- Different Ways of Knowing
- Making Schools Work
- Middle Start
- Talent Development
- Success for All
- Turning Points
More information about these programs will be gathered through research
and site visits.
Grant Applications
The SR/DT also has identified two grant opportunities for which it will
apply, the NASA Explorer Schools Grant and the Freedom to Learn Grant.
The NASA grant focuses on schools with significant numbers of underserved
students.
The use of NASA content and programs addresses needs in mathematics,
science and technology. If this grant is awarded, Scarlett will enter into
a three-year partnership with NASA, bringing exciting opportunities for
students, educators and families through:
- Sustained professional development
- Exciting learning opportunities for students
- Integration of technology
The Freedom to Learn Grant is designed to increase the achievement of all
Michigan students in core academic subjects through the use of wireless
technology. The vendor, Apple Computer, will provide the hardware, some
software and professional staff development.
Recipients of the grants will be notified by mid-April.
Technology Emphasis
The SR/DT is working toward two goals in the expansion and enhancement of
technological resources at Scarlett. The first goal is to achieve a ratio
of 1:1 in students to computers (the districtâs current ratio is 3:1.) The
second goal is to transform the media center into a technology center that
will be the hub of the school. The teamâs vision calls for the center to
include an Internet cafŽ and a staff and parent learning center.
Facilities Enhancements
In addition to new program initiatives and a heightened emphasis on
technology, the plan for Scarlett includes the following facilities
enhancements:
- Flexible learning spaces
- Accommodations for special needs students
- Renovation and expansion of the cafeteria/auditorium
- Parent center
- Central lobby/entrance improvements
- Courtyard renovations
- Outdoor education and recreational amenities
